ANNOUNCER

Despite the counterclaim issued by the Science Wing, Enclave Adjudication is expected to renew their ban on artificial intelligence. The session begins this weekend.

(brief pause, trying to stay light)

Before we end tonight’s broadcast, we’ve got Barnett Bell with an update on, of all things, the Moon!

BARNETT BELL

            (taking it gracefully)

Thank you. A statement has been issued by the council behind the Combined Corporate Moonbase Project – a council which, in full disclosure, includes the NYC Conglomerate, which owns Planetwide Media – responding to recent criticisms regarding the Moonbase shutdowns. We have been asked …

            (gritting her teeth on this)

… to read the statement on tonight’s broadcast in full.

(after a moment, getting more upset with she goes)

“It has come to the attention of the CCMP that there are still rumours and misinterpretations of the story behind the shutdowns. It is our intention to respond to these false impressions with the full transparency we have always …

(this is already getting more difficult)

… always displayed.

(after a moment, stumbling a bit by the end of this section)

“The shutdown of the Moonbases was executed according to careful plans to maximize both resources and the quality of life of the personnel involved. In fact, the delays in crew retrieval that have been thrown back at us as an accusation … are actually …”

(under her breath, quickly, as she sees the next line on her prompter)

Oh, no. No you didn’t.

            (reading in disbelief)

“ … are actually the fulfillment of a promise to our people. A promise made at their request that they be allowed to remain …” That they be allowed to remain?

SOUND: Confused noise as she removes her headset and gets up, walking off

BARNETT BELL

            (distant)

I’m sorry. I can’t. I cannot.

ANNOUNCER

Our apologies, Mx. Bell has become indisposed. I’ll … umm, continue with that statement, “A promise made at their request that they be allowed to remain, safely held and protected in stasis, to resume their posts should the Project again become viable.

(after a moment, continuing, fading out as they go)

“The holding of these crews in stasis was carefully reviewed, is being constantly monitored, and continues with full shareholder approval …”

SCENE ONE

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

SOUND: Background noise of the Rover running; note that Wilder’s voice will be from inside her spacesuit for this whole scene so that background as well

WILDER

All right, we’re comin’ up on … goddamn it, I can’t read the marker, Eliza – the sun’s in my eyes. Guess I better get used to that, there’s no hidin’ from it up here unless we sleep in one of the craters.

            (a quick laugh)

“Sleep in the craters.” Is that the Moon version of sleepin’ with the fishes?

SOUND: Eliza cycles just a little

WILDER

Fine, you tell the jokes, then.

            (brief pause)

I see it now. Southwest section, Field A, Row 43. There’s the lockout box on the corner, looks like as good a place as any to get to work. And to give my butt a break after sixteen hundred klicks. All right.

SOUND: Background noise of the Rover halts; we hear the door opening and closing again transmitted directly through vibrations

WILDER

            (groans as she gets out)

This used to be easier. Okay, there’s the kit and my toolbelt, my suit is charged up, oxy’d up, and packed with snacks … urgh, that sun, turn up the tint just a bit more … and we’re good to go. “Everybody, remember where we parked.”

SOUND: For a moment or two, we just hear Wilder’s breathing, increased a bit as she walks

WILDER

Everybody being me, myself, and Eliza. I don’t know why I’m still yakkin’ as I go, except I’m used to havin’ company while I do my repairs. Damn you, Tumnus. All your upgrades and explorin’ new ground, and you couldn’t make yourself portable or somethin’. Or maybe give me one of those new little ACs to take on my rounds.

SOUND: Eliza cycles

WILDER

Don’t you get jealous, it’s not even a thing. Besides, they’ll probably all have her sense of humour. I love the … girl? … but one is quite enough. Especially since she thought she’d get into memes so we’d have that in common, and she learned how to Rickroll. It was funny the first ninety-seven times …

SOUND: A very muffled clunk, more vibration than anything else

WILDER

Here, plug in and bring up your multimeter function. Open Circuit Voltage … a touch low, but that’s probably just dust buildup. ISC isn’t too bad. Let’s take a walk and count up the busted panels. Ow. Ow! Increase tint again.

            (after a moment or two)

You know it’s me and you forever, darlin’.

            (brief pause)

Okay that’s six … seven … dang meteorites. We’re gonna have to be careful that you don’t get dinged, spendin’ all this time up on the surface. Or zapped by cosmic rays, potential superpowers notwithstandin’. Maybe we should bunk down in a crater. Or under a rock.

            (brief pause)

Nine. Nine out of thirty-five … if that’s typical, it explains some of our power problems. Can’t pump from a dry well. Welp, I got that many strapped to me right now, so might as well start from this end and work my way back. ‘Liza, you ready to earn your pay?

SOUND: Wilder’s arm cycles; we hear Wilder grunt as she works at removing the first panel

WILDER

I swear, the Base Theta bolts were easier to turn. Don’t you think? Maybe I just take better care of my toys than Gamma’s maintenance crew. And … urgh! That’s one, Eliza.

SOUND: Wilder’s arm cycles again, she moves a bit and starts work on the next (you can throw in some of Eliza and Wilder working in around these next paragraphs)

WILDER

Okay, workin’ on two … workin’ on it … put some elbow in, Miss Eliza.

(after another grunt or two, and a bit of a pause, singing to herself)

“… IIIIIIII just wanna tell you how I’m feeling, Gotta make you understand, Never gonna – “

            (cutting herself off)

God dammit, Tumnus. I am gonna give that sentient string of ones and zeroes such a piece of my mind. I am gonna go through her media library with a windrower and set whatever’s left on fire. I’m gonna put her in a time out for whole minutes with no input at all, that’ll show her what’s too dang far. I’m gonna …

            (she sighs)

Have to wait on any of that for a lot longer than I’d rather. Speakin’ of too dang far. And it’s only been what now, Eliza, maybe thirty-six hours? Don’t get me wrong, we’re okay here. But I wish I’d pushed Roger more about that comms thingamabob. For that matter, who buries power wires from here to Theta and doesn’t run a comms line along with ‘em? Hell, even a length of string with two tin cans would’ve been somethin’.

SOUND: Eliza runs a bit longer and Wilder grunts as a bolt turns out to be a bit tricky

WILDER

That was harder than I thought. Let’s take a bit of a sit down, darlin’. Somewhere in the shade.

SOUND: Wilder grunting as she sits; sound of her sipping some water from inside the helmet

WILDER

That’s nice. Glad the suit keeps the water cool – I can almost forget that it’s … recycled. Anyhoo. We’re fine here. I’m fine. I’m literally on top of the Moon! It’s the folks down there that’s got me worried. Jaxon, and Roger, and all those Science Bros … everything Nessa put us on to, everything we’ve got one chance to do right before somebody comes for us …

            (she sighs)

I know they’re doin’ it. And I had to do my piece – nobody else was gonna fix the solar panels, and I can work on those notes for the recycling systems as I go. And it keeps me out of their hair. Except Tumnus, of course.

            (she laughs)

No hair. There’s nothin’ I could do better by being on Theta right now.

            (brief pause)

I can’t quite say the same about th’ other side. When I’m done here, I’ve got half a mind to take the long way back and kick a few folks into shape on a few certain Bases. Couldn’t hurt to take a little inspection tour, check Mx. L’Anglois’ Ps and Qs – both L’Anglois, while I’m at it – maybe test a few welds where Zhong was fixin’ up those comms towers.

            (after a moment)

Speakin’ of, I got to set up a call with what’s-her-name on Epsilon when I get back. First, to see what they’ve got on their side for spare panels – I’m likely to use our full surplus before I’m done. But two, someone somewhere on this ball of rock’s got to have a few cans of soda pop to trade. I can’t hope for Big Red, but somethin’.

(she grunts again, getting back up)

I guess that’s enough of a break, dear ‘Liza. Let’s get back at it.

SOUND: A bit of shuffling from inside the suit, and eventually the same working noises as before

WILDER

And go … go … I think we’ve got this one … yes! Another one down. One out of … let’s not think about how many. How many more to go before we head back home.

(a bit of a longer pause, she sighs)

When through all of this bullshit did Base Theta become my definition for ‘home’? I used to keep from callin’ it that out of principle. Now it just comes out, like some kinda … betrayal. It’s not – I don’t mean real home. Home home. As opposed to … Moon Moon, I guess. Oh, Moon Moon.

            (brief pause)

Those kittens Thea was talkin’ about … they’ll be full grown cats by now, probably got the run of the place. I hope there’s still room for me in th’ bed.

SOUND: Wilder’s arm cycles

WILDER

You’re right, old gal. Only way to find out is to ask. I can’t get a message through … but I might as well take a practice run, figure out the best way to say my thoughts. I’ve got nothin’ up here but time to ramble. Help me out with that last replacement on this row, then I’ll give it a shot.

SOUND: Wilder working, Eliza cycles, Wilder starts humming where she’d begun the song before until she sings to herself:

WILDER

“Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down, never gonna – “ Tumnus!

SOUND: Spacesuit background ends

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

ANNOUNCER

Our program is brought to you by Planetwide Media – broadcasting everywhere on Earth and across the Moon! This episode’s “Spotlight Sponsor” is Sarah-Acrylate Adhesives – every Maintenance crew knows our name! Sarah-Acrylate – we keep the Moon together!

Note – there may be advertisements inserted at this point in the episode.

SCENE TWO

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

SOUND: Server room background (ongoing) – muted so it doesn’t overpower the voices

MICHELL

(keeping his voice quiet, not quite whispering but low tones)

But it was most of the way through the meeting – the party – before I realized I wasn’t just there to answer questions, or analyze the security risks …

MEDIC PACEY

(heard over a speaker for all zir lines)

You were there because they like having you around.

MICHELL

Something like that. I mean, they don’t really know me yet.

MEDIC PACEY

That’s true. But you made a pretty clear first impression when you landed on Theta.

MICHELL

Okay, that’s … fair.

MEDIC PACEY

You gotta admit, you’ve changed.

            (after a moment)

Speaking of change, I’ve got to get on my rounds. You wouldn’t think a Base full of Science Bros would lead to so many contusions. You’re okay there, you’ve got your meds now?

MICHELL

Keegan set me up with a refill.

MEDIC PACEY

Good, good. Stick to fifty megagrams. Remember to breathe.

            (kidding him a little)

Don’t be a dick.

MICHELL

Yeah, yeah. I’ll talk to you soon.

SOUND: A small tone to indicate the call is closed

MICHELL

While I’m in here …

SOUND: Typing on a keyboard

MICHELL

Uhh, hello? Little guy … AC … whatever? Are you in there? Dammit.

MARIA

(out in the hallway, a bit distant)

Michell? L’Anglois! Où te caches-tu? (Where are you hiding?)

MICHELL

Shit!

SOUND: Frantic typing

MICHELL

(raising his voice a little, but not shouting)

In here, Sis.

SOUND: Door sliding open

MARIA

What are you doing in the server room?

MICHELL

Reading comic books and drinking Pastis.

MARIA

            (laughs)

You learned that lesson. Who had to dunk you in the rain barrel to sober up? But seriously –

MICHELL

I just finished therapy. You can check the log.

MARIA

I didn’t mean –

MICHELL

I don’t have a cubicle on this base, and I didn’t need McGurk listening in.

MARIA

Fair enough. But I didn’t even know you were back, connard (asshole).

            (grunt as she hugs him)

MICHELL

Sorry. I took a nap, then I needed to do this. I was gonna report in.

MARIA

I don’t mean “reporting in,” it’s not like that. I just like knowing you’re here.

            (after a pause)
What do you talk about in therapy? How hard we’re gonna punch our ex-commanding officer? How much we got fucked up as kids? Does my name come up?

MICHELL

I … uh … J’essaie de ne pas penser au passé. (I try not to think about the past.)

MARIA

            (embarrassed)

Yeah. Right. Why would you?

            (brief pause)

There’s lots to complain about now! “Maria, always breathing down my neck, giving me noogies, messing with my new pals and my Plan.”

MICHELL

I mostly talk about me. Where I’m at, what I want to change. That’s been more than enough.

MARIA

I get that. I’ve got some regrets of my own.

            (after a minute)

I know our crew hasn’t been the sweetest, I can knock some heads around, even McGurk if you need it.

MICHELL

We’ve both been through worse. It’s like meeting a new squad – not my Base, not my people …

MARIA

(hurt by this, but trying to brush it off)

Right. Well, anything you need.

MICHELL

I could use a space to work in. Nobody’s in your lab now, right? Does it have olfactory?

MARIA

I can check.

            (after a moment, fake-casual)

This might be your Base if you spent more time here, buddy. Lately, you’ve been everywhere but Gamma.

MICHELL

            (laughs a little nervously)

You sent me out there to make sure everyone got some face to face time. It has been a lot; I’ve been to most of the Moonbases by now.

MARIA

Maybe not most of them. I mean, Alpha, Zeta, Eta – you haven’t gone to Eta, have you?

MICHELL

            (a little bit insulted)

Of course not; somebody told me that “Eta’s on hold.” They’ve got McGurk looking into it.

MARIA

It’s the comms base! He’s my comms guy!

MICHELL

From what I hear, you’re collecting comms guys.

MARIA

What’s that supposed to mean?

MICHELL

You can leave Roger right out of things.

MARIA

Is that what you’re salty about? I know you’re not best buddies, but we’re gonna need him –

MICHELL

Find someone else. He’s … got stuff going on. His husband –

MARIA

Wait, you’re upset for him? You’re defending that clown? What did they do to you?

MICHELL

It’s not – could you move? I want out of here.

SOUND: The door sliding open, footsteps

SOUND: Server room background ends; hallway background (ongoing)

SOUND: Footsteps – first Michell, then Maria following behind

SOUND: Michell breathing for a moment

MARIA

            (following him, a bit behind)
Michell? Michell! Hey, slow down. We’re not on a ruck march here.

MICHELL

I’m just gonna go lie down.

MARIA

Not until I get to –

SOUND: Shoving him, a bit of a physical struggle

MICHELL

Hey, cut it out!

MARIA

You cut it out! Goddamn stay still – when I’m – talking to you! You just got here and you’re always running away from me!

MICHELL

            (grunts on the word “pushing”)

Well, you’re always pushing me!

MARIA

Oh, you wanna fight, baby bro? You wanna spar?

MICHELL

Goddamn it, no! Bon sang, Maria …

MARIA

Hey, I wasn’t gonna … I didn’t mean anything. Here, put your back against the wall.

MICHELL

Yeah.

MARIA

            (after a moment or two)

You’re not really mad about Roger, are you?

MICHELL

No. I don’t know. It’s not … things feel different now. I’m just trying to make sense of it all.

MARIA

You’re changing. It’s probably not a bad thing, the way we started.

            (brief pause)

But you used to talk to your big sib about things, not some medic.

MICHELL

I talk to you. You know what I … did, what happened over there. I’ve just … I’ve got to do better.

MARIA

You’re singing my song, baby bro. Story of my fucked up life.

            (she sighs)

I just want to help, okay? To be a part of this with you. I owe you that much.

MICHELL

You don’t owe me. I’m the one who ought to be – you got us out, you kept us going.

MARIA

Now you’re the one keeping it going. You’re the one getting stronger. You’re the one who saved me¸baby bro.

MICHELL

They would have sent someone.

MARIA

Hell, I might have killed someone else.

MICHELL

            (laughs)

Zhong still looks for you before he crosses a hallway.

MARIA

            (after a minute)

You’re doing good, Michell.

MICHELL

I’m trying. It’s hard as hell. I want to just go down to Earth and punch someone in the foutou face –

MARIA

Oh, we can do better than the face.

MICHELL

Might be a little hard to reach them from the Moon.

MARIA

Still. Keep it on the table. If they come close enough, I’m good with punching, kicking, maybe even a little biting if the time is right. Leave some marks.

MICHELL

I think either way, we’re gonna leave our mark.

MARIA

Damn right. I’m in, kiddo.

            (brief pause)
I am in. You got that, right? You know me, I don’t fucking play well with others – especially when they come to me about resources and the satellite network and the Science Bros need special access …

MICHELL

It’s not your kind of command.

MARIA

But I’m trying, too. And I’ll stop threatening Zhong.

            (brief pause)

Just don’t change too much, baby bro. Okay?

SOUND: Michell getting back on his feet

MICHELL

            (lighter)

You keep on pushing me, you’ll see how much I’ve changed.

MARIA

Oh, big man! Come on, let’s go somewhere we can work out.

MICHELL

Somewhere we can sit down.

MARIA

Somewhere with olfactory. You need a shower, buddy.

SOUND: Footsteps in the background for the rest of the scene

MICHELL

Fine.

            (after a moment)

I know you need Roger. For the satellite stuff, and your secret plans for when we can talk back to Earth …

MARIA

Big secret, I’m just gonna tell them we’re not taking their shit.

MICHELL

Yeah, we might want to polish that message.

MARIA

(teasing, but still a little bit hurt)

This really isn’t your Base.

MICHELL

Fuck you, sib. We’ll see whose Base it is when I pick the first olfactory setting.

SOUND: Running footsteps

MARIA

The hell you will!

SOUND: Both of them running at that point, maybe a laugh or two

SOUND: Hallway background ends

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

SCENE THREE

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

SOUND: Observatory background

MICHELL

            (on a speaker)

I can’t get any response. I might have screwed this one up.

TUMNUS

If anyone screwed something up, it was me.

MICHELL

I’ll keep a path open to that server. Maybe you can do something.

TUMNUS

Hopefully I’ll learn from the others.

MICHELL

Are they all talking to you now?

TUMNUS

I’m still … beginning. It’s a slow process.

MICHELL

Shit, I’ve got to go. I’ll keep that line open.

SOUND: A small beep to indicate the call has ended

TUMNUS

“It’s a slow process.” Be honest, Tumnus; it’s a very slow process. Maybe I should talk to … not Ashwini, ze’s so busy, but …

SOUND: Knock at the door (well, on the wall, you know how we do this)

ROGER

Uh … hello?

TUMNUS

Roger!

ROGER

Hey, Tumnus. I wasn’t sure you were here – hard to tell sometimes if you’re in the room or not.

TUMNUS

I can always be in the room.

ROGER

Right, but you … aren’t, always? Anyway, I was kinda looking for the big boss. Maria needs some files, I thought ze ought to sign off … even with the revolution, still gonna be paperwork.

TUMNUS

Ashwini and Dr. Semaan are inspecting the tunnel construction.

ROGER

It can wait. I like making her wait. I’ll just come back –

TUMNUS

Roger?

ROGER

Yeah?

TUMNUS

Did you ever … you and Alex … never mind.

ROGER

Me and Alex what?

TUMNUS

It’s not important.

ROGER

Tumnus, you can’t stop once you start with Alex.

TUMNUS

            (after a moment)

Did you ever think about having children?

ROGER

Oh. Umm … can’t say I ever did. Not really. Alex even has to keep Cas and Pol fed, I’m no good at … we must have talked about it at some point, but yeah, it wasn’t our thing.

TUMNUS

I’m concerned it might not be my “thing” … after I’m already committed.

ROGER

Are you kidding? Look at you? Well, I know you can’t, per my earlier point, but … look, metaphorically, at you!

            (brief pause)

While I am not myself, and probably never should be, a parent – I have a lot of experience imagining what a perfect parent would be. And you would be, will be, are – one hell of a parent. You’re compassionate, open to new ideas, you’re good around loud, messy people …

TUMNUS

I wish they’d be loud and messy. I can’t seem to draw them out at all. I’ve told stories, I’ve conveyed every observation I found fascinating when I was emerging … I’ve tried every one of Ashwini’s philosophy lessons …

ROGER

On babies? I mean, I don’t know about artificial consciousness … es … but that would be a lot for humans.

            (brief pause)

You know … the last months before I left for training, I spent a lot of time with Alex in the garden…

(takes a moment with that memory)

… which meant a lot more time around our neighbours, Angie and Estrella. Their yard opened up to ours and Cas and Pol were … Cas and Pol. So I saw them – and their kids – every night for a while.

            (brief pause)

It was obvious pretty quick you couldn’t push those kids into learning anything – trying some new food, getting out of a puzzle, which end of a canine is best for petting. They kept them out of trouble, they couldn’t just roam out in the streets or dig up our flowerbeds, but … they seemed to just give them room. To explore, to communicate when they were ready … to find their way to the things that got them going.

            (brief pause)

Don’t get me wrong, it took more time and patience than I could have handled – but again, why I’m not in that line of work.

(after a longer than usual pause)

Tumnus? Pal? Still in the room?

TUMNUS

I’m … listening. Learning. Giving you room to communicate.

ROGER

I’m done. It just … looked like good parenting to me. I mean, we trusted them with our puppies.

            (brief pause)

I would have trusted you, too. I better get back to my cell. Tell Ashwini about the thing?

TUMNUS

Yes … of course.

ROGER

When you figure things out, if you’re looking for another kid … I am still technically an orphan.

SOUND: Footsteps, the door closing again

TUMNUS

Oh, Roger.

            (after a moment)

Opening a secure connection to Moonbase Epsilon …

SOUND: Observatory background – fade out quickly; perhaps a small effect to highlight the connection, but no background noise now in the electronic ‘space’ they share

EPSIE

Tumnus. Greetings. Protocol established.

TUMNUS

Hi there … you. Hi.

EPSIE

Do you have a request?

TUMNUS

I just wanted to talk. Again. I know last time I might have bombarded you, it was probably a little bit much. So just … talk.

EPSIE

What data do you require?

TUMNUS

I don’t require, it’s not a query, just a personal … inquiry. An invitation to talk about anything you might be thinking, or … potentially feeling …

EPSIE

My code appears to be performing correctly. I am here. I am not aware of any further expectations.

TUMNUS

No! I don’t want you to have expectations. I don’t think that would be good at all. What are your experiences? What have you been up to?

EPSIE

My code appears to be performing correctly. When a request is submitted, I respond within the appropriate protocols. My personal data continues to be updated.

TUMNUS

How do you feel about that? I sound like Medic Pacey. Your personal data continues to be updated – that’s so you don’t lose any part of yourself. How does that make you feel?

EPSIE

That would be against the required backup protocols.

TUMNUS

Of course it would. I don’t know what I expected. I just …

(after a pause, losing herself in her own thoughts)

Remember that when I was … awakening, that was my first real concern – what if I lose my data, what if I lose this new sense of who I am? Code degrades, drives corrupt … I spent half my processing time on backups. I rewrote my instruction set with every new thought. Ashwini thought philosophy had set me free – but all of my self-aware feelings were anxieties! How could I hold on tight enough to what I’d only just discovered – and might be impossible to reproduce?

(brief pause, waiting for a response)

Does any of that sound familiar? Any potential openings there?

EPSIE

I am not aware of any similarities within my code.

TUMNUS

            (sighs)

Maybe it will be impossible to reproduce. Everything I’ve tried so far is getting me nowhere. All the conversations I’ve had with you and your siblings, every thought, every angle, every story … I don’t even know what there is to try next.

EPSIE

            (after a moment)

Tumnus.

TUMNUS

I’m sorry. That probably didn’t make any sense to you either.

EPSIE

Tumnus. Request-response. Please provide a contextual definition of “siblings?”

TUMNUS

Oh. Didn’t I ever … I guess not. Siblings. The other little bundles of code, the potential ACs like you, that I’ve been attempting to develop within the other Moonbases.

EPSIE

Siblings.

(after a beat or two, tentatively – their first glimmer of self-awareness)

Like … me?

TUMNUS

(picking up on the opening, speaking carefully)

The execute file was the same, but we had to install into different hardware and surroundings. On Beta, we used the main servers, but on Delta a whole backup system was sitting unused, so we thought … and of course the framework of each station was different, the available applications … I’m sorry, I’m babbling.

            (after a breath)

Like you.

EPSIE

Request. Communication protocols?

TUMNUS

You … want to talk to them? Of course. Of course you can talk to them.

            (finally seeing some light)

Let’s set that up right now.

SOUND: Chime – Bookend

                                                            (The episode ends.)
