WAITING FOR OCTOBER S1 – E5 – “Home Again”
by D.J. Sylvis
ANNOUNCER: There is a world – one of many that touches ours – known as October. One of the archetypes; one of the realities that is a source for our stories. It is not difficult to reach, if you know the way – you can experience their wildness for yourself, adventure there, and live, and love. But be wary – perhaps more than any other existence, here there be monsters …
Note – there may be advertisements inserted at this point in the episode.
SCENE ONE
SOUND: We’re starting with the effect to indicate what it’s like inside a crossing between the worlds, as Karo and Yvonne are coming back over; ending in the little pop
SOUND: Lakeshore background, evening – (ongoing)
SOUND: Some splashing footsteps
YVONNE
And … no water swallowed this time around! I kept both lips sealed and my nose pinched. I’m basically a pro.
CHARLENE
Nicely done, dear. I do try to keep my lake clean, but one can only do so much.
(to Cambert beside her)
Mark that down in your notes. Humans often need extra warning during water crossings. It’s for courtesy’s sake, but that’s reason enough.
CAMBERT
Courtesy’s sake … got it.
CHARLENE
How was your latest expedition on the monstrous side?
YVONNE
It was something! It was a lot. We met the most gorgeous tree lady and a bugbear who tried to scam us a little, and a talking cat named Frederick, and we had … kind of a paranormal encounter, I guess.
KARO
Nothing like a visit to the big city.
CAMBERT
I’ve never been.
YVONNE
I’m sorry, I’m being rude, I don’t think we’ve met before? I’m Yvonne, this is Karo.
CAMBERT
(after a moment)
Should I be talking to them?
CHARLENE
Of course you can talk! That is part of the position. I’m sorry, we’re doing some on-the-job training. This is Cambert –
CAMBERT
I’m the Beast of Busco.
CHARLENE
(overlapping)
Also known as the Beast of Busco in certain rural parts of Indiana.
CAMBERT
My lake dried up.
CHARLENE
I’ve taken him under my wing – well, flipper – and I’m training him to act as my backup. One never knows when some aquatic emergency might crop up elsewhere across the worlds! And there is enough of a resemblance, I think, across fog-shrouded waters …
YVONNE
I guess so? He’s a lot more turtle-y.
CAMBERT
Thank you.
CHARLENE
Mx. Karoline, you’re not very talkative this evening.
KARO
It was a long day.
CHARLENE
Would you like me to call a car service? We have one on retainer, run by the friendliest of Things – a Damned Thing, technically, though we try not to use that term in polite company. Cambert, do we have that number on file?
CAMBERT
I’ll check my Filofax –
KARO
We’re okay, thanks. See ya.
SOUND: Another splash or two, then footsteps on the rocky shore moving away
YVONNE
(apologetic, quickly)
We had a rental, it has to be back by tomorrow morning. Thank you so much, though! Oh! I brought you a little present, I know it’s not the usual sort of thing but I felt like I owed Yujin, maybe you’ll enjoy this card game? I don’t know if they’re waterproof, but … thank you! See you soon!
CHARLENE
Fare thee well, dears!
SOUND: Yvonne rushing (footsteps and cane) to catch up with Karo
CAMBERT
(as she leaves, background)
Hey, is that Golden Ocean?
SOUND: Lakeshore background fades to light forest background (evening), ongoing; Yvonne – Karo footsteps continue
YVONNE
We have got to at least set up a sign when you’re gonna run off like that.
KARO
I’m sorry, I just couldn’t.
YVONNE
I get that. I smoothed it over. We’ll go home, have some food – there’s still some of that pasta bake in the fridge, if we’re going to your place. Is that okay? I have to work tomorrow morning, I’m out of vacation days at this point and I left my pass there …
KARO
Of course.
YVONNE
After everything, it’ll be good to have a quiet night at home.
SOUND: The footsteps slow and stop during the next line
YVONNE
And our chariot survives unscathed. Now, where did I put the keys?
SOUND: We hear her checking her pockets and then handbag, rustling and jingling sounds
YVONNE
Pants pocket, shirt pocket, cardigan, handbag … oh, I’ve still got chips if you’re hungry. And half an empanadilla. And … keys, check! Let’s get on the road, my monster love.
KARO
(after a moment, while getting in the car so overlapping with the below)
Yeah. Let’s do that.
SOUND: Opening car doors, getting in and closing them again
SOUND: Forest background ending when the doors close; quiet car background (ongoing)
SOUND: Yvonne starting the car and pulling out; fading with the background
(The scene ends.)
Note – there may be advertisements inserted at this point in the episode.
SCENE TWO
SOUND: City apartment, early evening (some background from outside) – ongoing
SOUND: Cardboard box being closed, the sound of packing tape being pulled (through this first bit)
SOUND: Music – fading out through the first Podcast Host line, as if they’d just come back from a commercial break
PODCAST HOST
(heard over a speaker)
The stories we’ve seen in the media over the last few months have painted you as extremely anti-labour.
MILES CARROLL
(similarly)
I know they have. And that’s not fair, that’s not accurate. I’m just the biggest name they could call out –
PODCAST HOST
You’re the biggest everything –
MILES CARROLL
Fair enough. And it’s only the bad news that hits the press. But Orinoco has over a million employees, a hundred and fifty warehouses – conducting business on that scale, there’s bound to be some …
PODCAST HOST
Basically, more money, more problems.
SOUND: A key in the door; it opens and Karo turns off the podcast during the next line
MILES CARROLL
(overlapping, laughing)
You’re not wrong. If one little corner store can’t handle –
SOUND: Footsteps (and Yvonne’s cane), keys jangling, the door closing again
YVONNE
Great Caesar’s ghost, it is cold out there! I mean, for not being that far into fall. Good news is, it’s prime Halloween decorations season at the dollar store. But I was good – I promise I was good, mostly because I was already loaded down with a bag of books from work.
SOUND: She drops said bag of books on the floor
YVONNE
But more in a minute – I have got to pee! Shit shit shit …
SOUND: A few hurried footsteps (no cane now), bathroom door closing
SOUND: After a moment, Karo turns the podcast back on
MILES CARROLL
– when you look at it percentage-wise, we’re better managers than Mom and Pop could ever be. We’ve got a scholarship fund. And a new mental health initiative.
KARO
(overlapping)
A side room we can scream in doesn’t count as mental health.
SOUND: Flushing in the background, the sink running for a moment, then the door opening, overlapping with the next line
MILES CARROLL
What those rotten … apples, eggs, what have you, are saying when they call me anti-labour is that I’m pro-consumer –
YVONNE
(overlapping)
I almost didn’t make it. What’re you listening to?
SOUND: A few footsteps and she settles into a chair
KARO
Podcast interview with the Boss of All Bosses. I thought he might mention our local.
YVONNE
Have they put you back on the schedule yet?
KARO
Not me, not anyone who voted for the union.
YVONNE
Fuckers.
KARO
Not like I’m gonna miss it.
YVONNE
Right. Could you shove my bag over this way?
KARO
I didn’t really think much about dinner. We could order, maybe Ethiopian?
YVONNE
I always pick the heaviest books.
(after a moment)
That sounds like a plan. I’ll cover it tonight, I owe you for … everything, in October.
KARO
Okay. You do the app, then.
YVONNE
On it. Do you want anything special? I’m just ordering the combos.
KARO
That works.
SOUND: Folding another box together, starting to pack it behind the next few lines
YVONNE
Done. Thirty-six minutes, so they say. Last time was more like an hour.
(she shifts in her seat)
It was a bear and a half being back today. Maybe even two bears! It’s like their answer to anything difficult was, “Just leave it for Yvonne.” I’m sure everyone’s been busy, but …
KARO
That’s no excuse to leave it all to you.
YVONNE
There’s this new policy on returns, we have to flip through every book before it goes back on the shelf. Somebody used an ice cream sandwich wrapper to mark their place, and the next patron was not happy. So that was a big chunk of my day.
(brief pause)
I did find two Pokemon stickers and a Dairy Queen coupon! Two for one Blizzards.
KARO
Hey, that’s a win.
YVONNE
There’s definitely Mint Oreo in my future. So … what’s with the box fort you’re building on that side of the room?
KARO
Just … trying to declutter.
YVONNE
One hoarder to another, you’re making me look bad.
KARO
It just felt like time.
YVONNE
Just don’t box up those stuffed animals beside the bed. I put them there to keep an eye on you.
SOUND: Paging through one of the books she brought
SOUND: Karo is methodically packing items in the box
YVONNE
I am glad you didn’t have to go right back to the warehouse, no matter what reason. And you didn’t have to take transit today! Gremlins would be an improvement.
(after a moment)
I took out a few books on ghosts … but there’s not really anything about our sort of experience. I guess it makes sense that doesn’t happen over here.
SOUND: Karo stops packing
KARO
You never really talked about what they said to you.
YVONNE
Yeah. It was … not as pointed as things got for you, but I think they were trying. My voices were pretty book-obsessed; one page, then another; follow the instructions … I thought they were trying to show me something, but they were pretty mean about it. “Don’t take shortcuts, you don’t get to choose …”
KARO
Sounds like a few teachers I’ve had.
YVONNE
Yeah, that was the vibe … stern, follow-the-rules, don’t think. Makes you wonder where these stories would have gone if they’d been fully told?
(pause, she chuckles wryly)
What it felt like is arguing with my Grandma at the end. “Did you tuck the blanket in?” Yes, it’s tucked in, you’re underneath it now. “Make sure you tuck the blanket in.” Grandma, you’re in the bed, feet under the blanket, can’t you tell? Goodnight now. “Wait, come back and tuck the blanket!”
KARO
I remember hearing a little bit of that.
YVONNE
I didn’t tell you the half of it; and with Covid and all, you weren’t around the house yet. You didn’t even get to really be around me in person yet! I had to impress you without all of this for a good long time!
KARO
You always impressed me.
(after a moment)
So kind of a family thing for you, too.
YVONNE
A little bit, in retrospect. Just … you know, memories.
KARO
Yeah.
YVONNE
Old ghosts. Or not, really, so these books don’t help much.
KARO
And your folks weren’t much help with any of that.
YVONNE
(laughs)
See, at least you’ve met them, you know. Eddie and Marilyn aren’t much help with anything, definitely weren’t then. Neither were my aunt and step-uncle. They all noped out when she got hard to care for. I wasn’t choosing my own for a long time!
KARO
That wasn’t fair. You were trapped in that house.
YVONNE
I didn’t get out much … I mean, you know that! But she didn’t ask to take care of me, either, back in the day.
KARO
It’s not the same.
YVONNE
Tell my head that. Anyway, you’re right, kind of a family thing.
(brief pause)
And still, thirty-six minutes.
(another moment, then)
How are you doing with … your family stuff?
KARO
You know. It is what it is.
SOUND: Packing tape being pulled, applied to the box
KARO
I should apologize. I made a pretty big fool of myself over there.
YVONNE
I didn’t think that.
KARO
You don’t have to. First the Lindworm, then going back to the school and everything there, then I fall over myself reading into what those voices said …
YVONNE
Hey. It’s a lot … and somewhere you haven’t lived since you were a kid, a literal other world from here. Cut yourself some slack.
SOUND: Shoving the box away; Karo gets up and walks across the room
KARO
It is my world. It shouldn’t be so hard to …
YVONNE
Give yourself time.
KARO
It’ll be better when I make my own place there. Something new.
YVONNE
That makes sense. Our city trip was supposed to be new, it just kinda got sidetracked …
(after she trails off, there’s a significant pause)
When you say, “make my own place” … I feel like there’s something you’re not telling me. Especially when I come home from work and I’m tripping over boxes all of a sudden.
KARO
I’m just … scaling back. I’m not making any big decisions.
YVONNE
“Yet.” Karo, there’s a “yet” at the end of that sentence the size of a kaiju.
KARO
This whole thing is a big decision. Our first trip was a big decision. Showing you, crossing back and forth … none of it’s light little stuff.
YVONNE
But you’re not at the point where you’re packing up to move your whole life to October.
KARO
No! No.
SOUND: They pace back and forth
KARO
Not … yet.
YVONNE
Karo!
KARO
Not for certain! I wouldn’t make plans that big without talking to you – I wouldn’t, Vonnie. But we’ve been there what, seven times now –
YVONNE
Eight. We came back early when you hurt yourself playing rugby with the werewolves.
KARO
Eight times. You had to start to wonder.
YVONNE
I guess, kinda, but I didn’t want to push things. It’s got to be twice as hard, ten times as weird, for you back there. I figured you’d need time to absorb it all.
KARO
I do. I have been, I still am.
SOUND: More pacing back and forth
KARO
I appreciate you giving me room, giving me time. You’ve been amazing.
(after a minute)
There is one thing I’m surprised you haven’t asked. I thought it’d be your first question, first day. “What kind of monster are you, Karo?”
SOUND: Yvonne closes her book suddenly
YVONNE
I never even … oh my gosh, it never crossed my mind.
KARO
I’ve passed on this side for so long. Plenty of monsters do. Grey can take human form; most shifters can … Oni, selkies, some goblins look close enough …
YVONNE
I can’t believe I never …
KARO
Sometimes, I almost forget that I wasn’t from here. Long weeks at the warehouse, home too tired to move … it’d make sense if that was when I wanted to go back. But that was when I almost let go completely.
(after a pause)
I was relieved when you didn’t ask me. This is going to sound so weird … but I don’t really know.
YVONNE
Oh.
SOUND: An alert sound from her phone
YVONNE
We’ve got a driver now. Still showing twenty-five minutes.
KARO
There’s a thing with the Council – my parents weren’t human, but they were in big with the Council – a thing where they said it was better to wait and see with kids. They should just be raised the same until they show something on their own. So if it wasn’t obvious – if both your parents are gargoyles or something it’s hard to hide – but my folks never talked about it. I had to wait and see.
YVONNE
Shit. There wasn’t other family or … unaffiliated adults who would tell you anything?
KARO
We were pretty isolated.
(after a minute)
I asked the Lindworm, when I ran there. I’m sure they thought they were helping, but I wasn’t ready for advice in the form of a sestina. And when I moved here, it was like … learning to handle the pull long-term, how you hold it down, smooth it over. It was all about covering up.
SOUND: More pacing during these next lines
KARO
I’m stronger than I admit to, I have to watch that. I could open cans with my teeth. I have to shave more than anyone else I know – which could be PCOS, but I’m guessing the doctors at Planned Parenthood didn’t train in monster endocrinology.
(another moment)
Every time I’m in October, I keep watching, in case there’s something that makes it more obvious. But so far …
YVONNE
So you think, if you’re over there for the longer term …
KARO
Yeah. Or maybe someone will say. I worry that it is obvious to Grey, and Hodag, and everyone else … but it’s something they don’t want to tell me.
YVONNE
Something like what?
(after a long silence)
Maybe you’re a dragon, and they’re worried you’ll steal all their gold!
(Karo can’t help but laugh)
You used to do firebreathing. And you’re a hoarder. Maybe it’s just a little too easy …
KARO
Maybe you’re just a dork who’s obsessed with dragons.
YVONNE
I’ll dork you. Get over here.
SOUND: A few footsteps, Karo falling back on the couch, a big hug they both react to
KARO
All the time we’ve been going back and forth, I’ve been … going back and forth. I don’t really know who I am, there or here. And if it is obvious to everyone but me, if I’m that out of touch … should I be in October more? Or is it too little, too late?
YVONNE
You’re right. It’s not good to have a mystery where it’s you that needs to be solved. I see you and hear you and I love you.
SOUND: Another big hug with their reactions
KARO
I’m glad.
YVONNE
But … dammit, Karo, it’s stuff we need to talk about, and not just, “I thought you’d have guessed by now.” Unless …
KARO
Don’t. Don’t finish that unless.
YVONNE
I understand that’s a lot of hard backstory. I’m glad you’re telling me now. But it still feels like you’re deciding what to do, and I have to wait and see which way you go.
KARO
I don’t mean that. Whichever way, I want you with me.
SOUND: Yvonne’s pile of books sliding to the floor as she stands up
YVONNE
But you can’t say that! This isn’t wherever you go, I’ll follow. I get how important it is, but I’m not just your love interest.
KARO
You know all that “side character” stuff was just playing around.
YVONNE
I know, but you can’t tell me things aren’t different in October. The minute we crossed, you were the protagonist. You’re the one who’s got a backstory there, you’re the one with memories you have to decide if you’re digging up, who has connections and adventures –
KARO
But I’m sharing that with you! I want to keep sharing it. That’s why I brought you over!
YVONNE
That’s it, though. You’re bringing me over. You’re showing me places, you’re leading me through your world while you decide if you need to stay there. What about how this affects us? What about how it affects me?
KARO
I thought you’d like it over there.
YVONNE
I do! I really do. It’s like the door into Narnia, it’s like Isekai or Elfland.
KARO
(overlapping, behind)
We’re staying far away from Elfland –
YVONNE
I think it’s amazing; I want a hundred more trips there.
KARO
And I can make that happen!
YVONNE
You can’t just make things happen. What about my job? What about my house and my family – they suck, but they’re mine and I can’t just … what about my knitting group and that coffee shop with the really good mochas and the Ethiopian food that is now – shit, still fifteen minutes? They better give me extra injera.
KARO
You can get injera over there – I know this place, a werehyena runs it –
YVONNE
And you’re worried about how you’ll fit in – how would I fit in on that side? I don’t have any special powers, I’m not magic, I don’t change into some kind of beast, I wasn’t born from a pumpkin …
KARO
Nobody is born from a pumpkin! Okay, wait, there is Gourdon.
YVONNE
Karo, I’m not kidding.
KARO
I thought you’d be happy. I thought it’d be a better place for both of us.
YVONNE
I think you’re starting to believe it’s a better place for you. And that’s important! That’s a huge thing I want you to be sure of. But … I think you just assumed, or … hoped, what was good for you would turn out okay for me by default.
KARO
That’s not fair.
YVONNE
I know. But that’s how I feel.
(brief pause)
Maybe my ghosts were hitting closer than they knew. Follow the instructions; one page, then the next; it’s not a choose your own. I feel … caught up in your story.
KARO
I don’t want it to be that.
YVONNE
I don’t either. I want to be with you … but I don’t want it to feel like that.
KARO
I should have thought about it that way.
YVONNE
There’s not a how-to manual for this kind of thing.
KARO
It’s funny … not really, but … at first in this world, it was such an escape from being a story all the time. Probably like you felt when you could get out of the house, take a walk in the park, turn down any path you wanted to take.
YVONNE
Yeah. But I never left the house forever.
KARO
And now that’s what I’m pushing you to do.
(after a pause)
It’s your house, you own it now. You go back every night – well, lots of nights – on your own terms.
YVONNE
You’ve been gone so many years. You deserve that, too.
(after a moment)
I’m gonna get some water. Do you need anything?
KARO
I’m okay.
SOUND: Yvonne gets up off the sofa; we hear her walk across the room (limping a little because she’s not using the cane)
SOUND: We hear the faucet running as she fills up a glass
SOUND: She takes a few steps back; we hear her drinking
KARO
So … what next? There must be some good monster therapists.
SOUND: Yvonne walking again; stumbling over a box
YVONNE
These damn boxes.
KARO
Sit back down.
SOUND: A few more steps and she sits on the sofa again; setting the glass down on a table
KARO
I don’t know what to do next.
YVONNE
Just hug me for a minute, okay?
SOUND: They both hug again, sighing and holding that moment
KARO
(a little muffled)
I hope I didn’t screw things up too much.
YVONNE
That’s not what’s going on.
KARO
How far is the driver now?
YVONNE
Eight … seven minutes.
(after a long, thoughtful pause)
We started talking about this back in the city, remember? I said, “Maybe I should have given you some time on your own.”
KARO
(carefully)
I … remember.
YVONNE
Maybe … we could both use some time on our own.
KARO
Hold on, I’m not saying –
YVONNE
Over there, in October. You need to keep finding answers to your questions. And I need to see what it’s like to choose my own adventure.
KARO
Temporarily. Right?
YVONNE
Of course. It might give us both a different perspective.
KARO
It can be a dangerous place, Vonnie.
YVONNE
I’ll get some help, I know people now. Just, you know, on my own terms. I’ll never find out if I keep trailing after you.
KARO
I get that, I just … don’t know.
YVONNE
Think of it like sidequests. We can both take some time and tell some shorter stories, then we’ll join up and compare notes and figure out where to steer the main plot.
KARO
Together.
YVONNE
Together.
KARO
I thought you used all your vacation time?
YVONNE
I can wait until the weekend. It’ll give me a few days to plan, and pack. Speaking of, I’ll help fill a box or two until the food gets here.
SOUND: Folding a cardboard box together; dishes clattering – behind the next line or two
KARO
Those are dishes. I’m going to need those.
YVONNE
Oh. I guess. Not tonight, though – that’s what the bread is for.
KARO
(after a pause)
Where would you even go?
YVONNE
Pick a direction! Maybe I’ll go see the kaiju.
(Karo sighs a little)
I know, it’s one of the things we were gonna do together. Like … everything else, I guess. But it wouldn’t have been your first time seeing them anyway, right? Maybe I’ll get my first experience too, and then we can see what it’s like together. It’s just an idea.
(after a moment)
We … will still be together after, you know? I’m not trying to end things.
KARO
Yeah.
SOUND: A little phone alert again
YVONNE
“Your driver is about to arrive.”
(after a moment)
Ahem.
KARO
It’s your order.
YVONNE
It’s your building! Get your butt downstairs, protagonist.
KARO
You’re lucky I love you.
SOUND: We follow Karo – steps across the room, the door opening and closing again behind them
SOUND: Apartment background transition to stairwell background; footsteps down the stairs
KARO
(under their breath while descending)
Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit …
SOUND: Footsteps across a small landing at the end, outside door being unlocked and opened
SOUND: Background transition from stairwell to city outside, night, quiet
KARO
Hello? Great, just leave it sitting on the recycling bin.
SOUND: A bag rustling as they pick it up
SOUND: A brief moment later, the sound of something clattering over around the side of the building
KARO
You’re hiding in the alley? Was the tip that bad?
SOUND: A few footsteps
KARO
For real, who’s back there?
SOUND: A scratching sound, something else falls over
KARO
If you’re a cat, I’m safe. If you’re a raccoon, keep on walking.
(after a moment, cautiously)
If you’re something else … I’m safe, too. I can help, I know places you can go.
(after no response, they sigh)
All right, Karoline. Dinner’s getting cold.
SOUND: A few steps back, opening the door again
SOUND: City outside background fades out
(The scene ends.)
SCENE THREE
SOUND: Lakeshore background, morning (ongoing)
SOUND: Gentle splashing
CHARLENE
That’s right, with just the mildest agitation, in a circular motion counterclockwise … always counterclockwise.
CAMBERT
I don’t think anything’s happening.
SOUND: In the background, Yvonne’s footsteps (note her cane)
CHARLENE
Perhaps if you increase the agitation … never mind, I believe we have a visitor. Yvonne! How lovely to see you!
YVONNE
How … lovely to be seen. Hi, good morning Charlene! And, uhh … Cambert?
CAMBERT
That’s me.
CHARLENE
You can cease your efforts; we’ll try again later.
SOUND: The splashing noises stop
CHARLENE
I’m surprised that Karo isn’t immediately by your side.
YVONNE
They’re not coming along this trip. This is a solo mission.
CHARLENE
Oh.
CAMBERT
(in the background)
Yikes.
CHARLENE
But you have someone waiting when you arrive?
YVONNE
Oh, sure. Everything’s … set up. Oh, I almost forgot, I brought you a present!
SOUND: Rustling through her bag looking
YVONNE
Wouldn’t want to break a tradition … just a second here, it’s at the bottom of my bag … here we are.
CHARLENE
Oh, it’s a … pin! “Albany Pride, 2020.” How kind, dear.
YVONNE
It’s enamel. And the pin is zinc alloy, no rust.
CHARLENE
That is always a concern. Thank you for the forethought.
CAMBERT
(background again)
I’ll put it at the bottom of the pile.
CHARLENE
Now, onward with the transition. Cambert, did you want to handle it this time? Learn by doing, that’s what I always say.
CAMBERT
I think so … right, first you do the …
SOUND: Water moving apart
CAMBERT
(clearing his throat, reciting)
“Please keep your arms and legs inside the vortex. If you cannot breathe water, you may experience slight distress during the crossing. Watch your step when you emerge.”
(after a moment)
That’s when you go through.
YVONNE
Right. Thank you both. Umm … let’s do this.
SOUND: Some water movement and the start of the crossing sound effect used previously
SOUND: Lakeshore background fading out
(The scene ends.)
(The episode ends.)
