WAITING FOR OCTOBER: TO THE MOON
E2: “On The Farm”
by D.J. Sylvis
ANNOUNCER (Deej): There is a world – one of many that touches ours – known as October. One of the archetypes; one of the realities that is a source for our stories. It is not difficult to reach, if you know the way – you can experience their wildness for yourself, adventure there, and live, and love. But be wary – perhaps more than any other existence, here there be monsters …

ANNOUNCER (Robin): You’re listening to “To The Moon” – a Waiting for October miniseries.
SCENE ONE
SOUND: Farmhouse background, kitchen noises a ways off (ongoing)
SOUND: A phone alarm sounds and then is switched off, bedsheets moving
YVONNE
Ohhhhhh … it took forever to get to sleep, I think it must be the gravity of the whole thing.
(she giggles)
Karo? Come on, the gravity of the thing? Karo?
SOUND: A sudden more violent rustling of the covers
YVONNE
Shit. Nothing like waking up alone in a strange house. On the moon. Pull yourself together, girl, time to –
(a sudden stab of pain hits her, she hisses)
SOUND: Moving around on the bed during the next line
YVONNE
Fuck, fuck fuck! Oh, you bastard leg … flex, gentle now, flexxxx … what a day this’d be to have that robot body …
SOUND: Breathing hard, a long creak as she sits up at the side of the bed
YVONNE
What a time to be alive. Now, if I can get – on my goddamn – feet –
(groans)
Uuuuup we go. I’m gonna call that a win. Shaky, but a win. Let’s go see where the people are.
SOUND: Halting, stumbling footsteps, a door opening
SOUND: The footsteps continue, the kitchen noises are sounding closer
YVONNE
(under her breath)
Ow, ow, ow. This is so not great.
SOUND: The footsteps stop, we hear running water
BEM
Finally up and around?
YVONNE
Sometimes it’s hard to get going. Oh, is that coffee?
BEM
Close enough. Serve yourself.
SOUND: A few footsteps across the room, pouring a cup, sipping
YVONNE
(disgusted)
Oh! Ummm …
(forces herself to swallow)
BEM
It’s more mushroom spores than anything else.
YVONNE
That … explains a lot. Do you know where Karo’s gone off to?
BEM
They’re out in the fields with Hodag. There’s not much yet to do – just as well for him – but there’ll be a few prisms to empty and stones to turn over.
(after a moment, turning off the water)
Grab a cloth, you can dry while I wash.
YVONNE
(groaning just a little under her breath)
Is it okay if I bring over a chair?
BEM
Whatever you need to do.
SOUND: Yvonne drags a chair over, they start washing and drying in sequence
YVONNE
All that stuff was serious? You really farm moonbeams up here.
BEM
Can’t do it anywhere else. There’s a good market for ‘em down below. A lot of the older types use moonbeams – Auncle Lantern needs them for the Little Ones, the Butterfly People use ‘em, witches in the Council. And the Wilds always need moonstones. Just like they’ve got those flowers that help to hold the changing back –
YVONNE
Wolf flowers –
BEM
Moonstones help with their changing to. More for the young ones, or the really old, but there’s always a need. And they don’t last – they have to be recharged after a time.
YVONNE
Which can only happen on the Moon.
BEM
There you go. And I’m sure Hodag told you there’s not many folks up here to do it.
(they sigh)
Particularly of late.
YVONNE
(after a moment)
You don’t have any idea what’s out there? What kind of monster would be …
BEM
Right now, we don’t even know what’s happened. Folks have gone missing, no sign of whether they’re … you know. Last week, it was our neighbour down the way, before that it was Hodag’s great-uncle Tripodero …
YVONNE
It’s a strange thing, for sure.
(a thought hits her and she gasps)
You don’t think Karo and Hodag are in danger out there now?
BEM
Calm, child. Your partner seems like they can take care of themself –
YVONNE
That’s true –
BEM
And Hodag ought to know to be careful. He did grow up here.
YVONNE
It’s hard to picture that. Every time I’ve seen him he was deep in a forest, or feeding a flock of manman ducks, or in the middle of a field setting up wind gauges …
BEM
That’s the kind of life he wanted.
YVONNE
Sometimes it’s a long way to find a place that’s right for you.
BEM
(after a moment, softening just a touch)
He grew a whole garden back in the day, did he tell you about that? He had seeds sent up special. You should see; it’s still down there in a cavern beneath the –
SOUND: They’re cut off by heavy footsteps on the porch outside, and the door opening
KARO
There she is! Vonnie, you missed a time!
HODAG
Hey.
SOUND: The door closing again
BEM
You finish up the chores?
HODAG
And fed the livestock, and checked in on my garden – thanks for keeping that up.
BEM
Don’t thank me.
KARO
We even found a stray out behind the barn.
YVONNE
You found what?
KARO
Oh, she seemed harmless enough, we let her follow us home.
SOUND: Footsteps, the door opens again
MILAMO
There you are. I said hold up a minute.
KARO
Milamo!
MILAMO
This must be your better half! Milamo, I’m the sibling who stayed.
YVONNE
Yvonne. Sorry we missed you last night.
MILAMO
You all went to bed before I finished my recital.
KARO
Oh good, there’s coffee.
YVONNE
(trying to be subtle)
Karo. Ix-nay on the offee-cay.
SOUND: It’s too late and we hear Karo taking a slurp of ‘coffee’
KARO
Oh … uhh … ohh. That’s definitely gonna wake you up.
SOUND: In the background for a while, some general kitchen bustling – cupboard doors, shuffling around, chair moving
MILAMO
You can handle it. I’ve got a few thermoses ready for the hike. All our gear is out on the porch.
YVONNE
What’s going on?
KARO
Looks like the plan is to –
BEM
Don’t forget the laser rifle.
MILAMO
Way ahead of you.
YVONNE
You’ve got lasers? Like pew-pew lasers?
HODAG
Unfortunately.
BEM
When the sci-fi folks moved on, they left a lot of gear behind. Most of it’s useless by now –
HODAG
And the rest is too dangerous to use.
MILAMO
Shit, I’ve fired that rifle dozens of times. Only shot myself once. Vonnie, see that toe?
YVONNE
Oh.
HODAG
You don’t even need it! You’ve got a built-in defense.
MILAMO
Fair enough.
SOUND: She spits; we hear a pellet ricochet around the room
MILAMO
But lasers are fun. You can’t argue with that.
HODAG
Fun’s not exactly the point –
BEM
Quit squabbling with your sister. The laser rifle goes.
HODAG
I’m just trying to … fine. I’m gonna go find my boots.
BEM
Sharpen your horns while you’re back there. You’re a mess.
SOUND: Heavy footsteps shuffling off
YVONNE
So going back a page or two, the plan is …?
KARO
We’re just gonna –
MILAMO
We’re heading out on patrol to find whoever or whatever, and we’re gonna end it. Done and dusted.
YVONNE
You’re going out on foot? With one … pew-pew among you? Is that safe?
KARO
It’ll be okay –
MILAMO
Hell no, it’s not safe. For them.
(she laughs)
Vonnie, you better get dressed. Soon as my lazy bro gets his butt moving, we’re headed out.
YVONNE
Oh, right … I, umm …
KARO
Don’t feel like you have to. I can –
YVONNE
I just … barely made it to my feet this morning. And as enticing as a Moon hike sounds …
KARO
No, of course.
YVONNE
I know it’s why we’re here and all –
MILAMO
No worries. Someone’s got to keep an eye on the homestead, right?
BEM
The homestead is safe.
KARO
You stay here and keep it even safer. You deserve a break – you just climbed a mountain a few days back.
YVONNE
Right. “Climbed.” That was me, all right.
MILAMO
(calling out)
Sib! We’re all waiting on you!
HODAG
(distant)
Almost ready!
(quieter)
Jerk.
MILAMO
Karo, you’ve got all your gear?
KARO
I should go check. Yvonne, you’re gonna be …?
YVONNE
Of course. You stay safe. We’ve got a lot more plotted out together.
KARO
You’ve got that right.
SOUND: A quick kiss, then Karo’s footsteps and the door opens / closes
MILAMO
(yells even louder than before)
Hodag! Get a move on!
SOUND: Heavy footsteps hurrying to them
HODAG
Why don’t you eat a bag of –
BEM
That’s enough. Both of you, out. Get to work.
HODAG
Yes, Per.
MILAMO
Back soon!
SOUND: She heads out first; door opens
HODAG
(apologetic, to Yvonne)
It’s gonna be okay.
SOUND: He leaves as well, and the door closes; the kitchen quiets down in general
BEM
They’ll sort it out, Endling willing.
YVONNE
They seem pretty sure of themselves.
BEM
I trained them well. Even the boy, despite his life choices.
YVONNE
You were going to show me that garden he grew?
BEM
Right.
SOUND: Slowly, we hear a bunch of little pattering noises on the roof and windows, like a quiet rainstorm
YVONNE
Does it rain up here?
BEM
Meteorites. Not a big deal, but we should wait it out before …
YVONNE
Of course.
(after a pause)
All the way to the Moon, and I’m stuck on my ass during the big adventure. I didn’t even get to fire the laser.
BEM
I might know where Mil keeps a backup behind the barn.
YVONNE
(laughs)
Oh, really?
BEM
I’ll show you after the storm slows down.
YVONNE
Fair enough.
SOUND: She picks up the ‘coffee’ again and takes a sip
YVONNE
Ugh … I thought it might be better the second time.
SOUND: There’s a knock at the door
YVONNE
Are they back already?
BEM
My daughter’s never knocked once in her life.
(calling out)
Who is it?
(no response)
It’s probably the neighbour. Just a sec!
SOUND: They get up and move toward the door
YVONNE
Wait, didn’t you say the neighbour was –
SOUND: The scene, and background noise, etc. cuts off before we learn anything else
Note – there may be advertisements inserted at this point in the episode.
SCENE TWO
SOUND: Moon surface background, rockier (ongoing)
SOUND: Footsteps in rock / sand, ongoing
KARO
(after a while)
So … do we know where we’re going?
HODAG
Towards Asimov Rock.
MILAMO
(overlapping)
We’ll head up Occam’s Ridge, see what we can – Asimov Rock? What’s the point in that?
HODAG
Per said the last disappearances were –
MILAMO
That was a week ago! You think they’re standing around waiting to get caught?
HODAG
And you’re gonna find them wandering up and down the razor’s edge.
MILAMO
I’ve got a better idea than you.
HODAG
It makes more sense to start from the last known location –
The footsteps slow and stop over the next line or two
KARO
Which one is closest? We can try both, just –
MILAMO
The Ridge goes up along this way. That’s where I’ve been headed the whole time.
HODAG
If you’d said so before, I would have told you I was heading for the Rock.
MILAMO
I’m surprised you remember which way that is.
HODAG
Could you cut that stuff out? You asked me to come back; here I am. I have to put up with that other crap from Per, but not you.
MILAMO
Well, someone woke up on the shady side of the crater this morning.
(Hodag growls)
Tell you what – you and Karo keep going your way; I’m gonna walk the Ridge and see what I can see.
HODAG
The whole point is to stay together –
MILAMO
I’ve got the laser in case of emergency. I’ll be back. Try not to get lost, groundhog.
SOUND: She dashes up an incline beside them, we hear dust and rocks sprinkling down
KARO
(coughs a bit)
Took off just like the Roadrunner, cloud of dust and everything.
HODAG
Sorry about that.
KARO
Groundhog?
HODAG
It’s an insult the Astros used to say.
KARO
They’re the ones who split off to the sci-fi world?
HODAG
Singularity.
KARO
That’s quite the name.
HODAG
They were quite the … never mind. Let’s keep going.
SOUND: Their footsteps continue (ongoing)
KARO
It must have been something to be around back then! Rockets and communicators and tractor beams and UFOs and – aliens?
HODAG
I mean, we kinda became the aliens.
KARO
Really? Yeah, I guess that makes sense.
HODAG
Kinda. We started for the same reasons as most monsters, just … up here. I guess when humans started looking up into space and wondering. But we were us, still the same really, but on the Moon. All the technology and lasers and stuff, that was more used against us. Maybe you had to be there.
KARO
That doesn’t seem fair. Lots of places in October have science and tech. I mean, even Shelley was …
MUSIC: Weave some of the theremin theme into the background during Hodag’s monologue
HODAG
We’ve adapted over the years. Stories have changed. What humans are afraid of, what they don’t understand … it moved from the shadows below to the big “out there,” the great unknown.
(after a beat)
When we first became, it was amazing. It was glorious. The Moon looked like Dr. Seuss drew it – wild fantastic forests, lakes that bubbled at one end and froze solid at the other, flying lizards. Every monster was different and it was incredible.
(brief pause)
But the thing about humans … I like Yvonne, but humans … they want to conquer their fears. They don’t want to know the unknown, they want to control it. Science changed their stories. They built rockets; they landed on their Moon and they planted a flag. Things transformed.
(brief pause)
I don’t know if they really understand the universe better – you’d know more about that than I do – but that’s what they tell themselves. They went out boldly and took things over and we could either play along, become their ‘aliens’ or we could hide in the diminishing Moon-forests or under the lakes until Singularity came along.
KARO
That must have been a lot to live through.
HODAG
No surprise most of us vanished into October.
KARO
So this was in the Fifties, right?
HODAG
That’s when it really took off.
KARO
You left a long time ago. But your Per said … fifteen years?
HODAG
I used to visit. Never as much as they’d like, and it … got harder to do.
KARO
Thus, Shelley.
HODAG
Yeah.
SOUND: They just walk for a bit
KARO
How far have we gone at this point? Maybe we should wait for –
SOUND: Milamo coasts back in on a minor landslide at just that moment; they all stop
MILAMO
I thought you’d be at the Rock by now. Did you forget where it is?
HODAG
Was your moonwalk good for anything?
MILAMO
I scouted things out. I could see ten klicks or so in every direction.
KARO
I’ll bet, with those legs.
MILAMO
Right? You don’t want to count on horn-in-the-dirt here.
HODAG
(starting to get a little upset)
You scouted. Did you see anything?
MILAMO
More than you’ll ever know, sib.
HODAG
Anything helpful?
MILAMO
Let’s get going again.
SOUND: They all start walking together again
KARO
Hodag was telling me about the good old days. I wish I could have seen what the moon looked like then.
MILAMO
It was a mess. Trees everywhere – did he tell you about the trees? Terrible.
HODAG
Do you know how many of those species are extinct? I tried to save some cuttings when I left.
MILAMO
Good riddance, that’s what I say.
HODAG
To me or the trees?
MILAMO
Karo, things are much better now. You should stay and visit after we sort this out. I know he won’t.
HODAG
Are you serious with this? What did I ever do to you?
MILAMO
Other than leave me to rot while you started a new life in Mad Monster Party Central?
HODAG
Wait a minute! Is it better up here or did I leave you to rot?
(after a minute)
It’s like you just want to pick a fight with me.
MILAMO
Just figured that out, did you?
SOUND: The walking stops
HODAG
What are you talking about?
MILAMO
It’s almost like I saw something while I was up on the Ridge, but I didn’t want to say so because they might be listening in … so fighting with you was the best way to lure them into a surprise attack.
HODAG
Hold on a minute –
MILAMO
Not that I’m taking back anything I said, I’m just saying – get down!
SOUND: Milamo, Hodag and Karo all hit the ground; just then in the distance, we hear motorized treads and robotic movements
SOUND: Milamo fires the laser rifle several times in succession, pew pew PEW
KARO
What is it?
MILAMO
That is a robot. A goddamn robot! Haven’t seen one like that since the 70s.
KARO
Really?
HODAG
It can’t be! They were the first to leave for Singularity.
SOUND: More robotic noises in the distance, and energy weapon sounds that are different from Milamo’s laser (more charging-up-and-discharging type sounds)
MILAMO
Well, unless you’re being shot at by a figment of our imagination –
SOUND: They return fire a few times in succession
KARO
What can I do?
HODAG
Hold on –
MILAMO
(overlaps)
I’ve got this. But thanks for asking.
SOUND: The robot fires back with their weapon; Milamo fires again
HODAG
Hold on a minute!
(calling out)
Stop shooting! What do you want?
MILAMO
I think the shots fired should answer that question.
HODAG
You fired at them first!
MILAMO
Because I’m handling this. Karo, why don’t you –
NM3
(at a distance)
Three enemy combatants identified. Monster … monster … monster. Accessing established protocols.
HODAG
What protocols?
MILAMO
Get down!
SOUND: She returns fire again, NM3 shoots back
MILAMO
Fucking –
KARO
Are you hurt?
MILAMO
The damn thing is overheating.
NM3
(sounding a bit closer)
Put down your weapons and no harm will come to you.
HODAG
Hold on! Just hold on a –
NM3
Your cooperation is appreciated.
MILAMO
Karo! Get out there and … distract it for a minute!
HODAG
With what?
SOUND: Hodag jumps to his feet and runs out towards the robot
KARO
Hodag! Wait!
HODAG
Stop, okay! We’re not enemy combatants. We’re not a threat to you.
MILAMO
Sib! Get your ass back here –
(yelling)
He doesn’t speak for us!
NM3
(replying to Hodag, perhaps overlapping with Milamo)
It seems unlikely. We are already engaged in battle actions.
HODAG
That was … a mistake.
MILAMO
What?
HODAG
We were responding to a threat, not starting one. We’re here because our friends and neighbours – other monsters like us – have been disappearing. Do you know anything about that?
NM3
Reviewing … circumventing file restrictions. Defining “friends and neighbours.”
MILAMO
(whispering to Karo)
I think I can take it out now.
KARO
Well, wait. Give him a chance.
HODAG
Right? Friends … not an enemy, not a threat. We didn’t even know you were still here.
NM3
We are here. We exist within the ongoing conflict. Enemy combatants have been processed according to –
HODAG
Protocols, right.
SOUND: A rush of sand and rocks as Milamo runs forward
MILAMO
There, see! It confessed! What more do you want?
NM3
Armed combatant approaching. Protocols established –
HODAG
No! Stop! She’s not a combatant. We aren’t enemies. That all ended decades ago – you shouldn’t even be here!
NM3
The ongoing conflict –
HODAG
That’s not even a thing! Don’t you know, can’t you tell? It hasn’t been for so long –
SOUND: A small warning alarm somewhere in NM3’s systems; some electrical static
NM3
Ongoing conflict … enemy combatants … as per the Wells-Pal Protocols … if there is no conflict, the protocols are …
SOUND: More of a complete breakdown and then a reset
NM3
(starting to sound closer to human through this)
The conflict is over, the conflict has been over. Do you know how many times I’ve tried to tell him that, but I can’t be trusted, I’m a machine who can’t take initiative over a …
(brief pause, more robotic again)
But that’s not fair. I do operate according to instructions. I am a machine. And not a recent model, there’s corrosion in places I don’t like to think about. I should appreciate the fact that he still considers me useful for these missions. I should remain useful. Are we still fighting?
SOUND: Its weapons begin to charge up
HODAG
No!
MILAMO
Get back! Give me a clear shot!
KARO
Stop! We’re not fighting! We’re not fighting.
SOUND: It powers back down its weapons
NM3
It seems odd to take the word of one’s opponent. But I am not used to deciding such things.
HODAG
You can trust us.
MILAMO
Hodag!
HODAG
Some of us.
MILAMO
Sib, can I talk to you?
HODAG
Now?
(he sighs)
SOUND: We hear him walking a few steps over to Milamo
NM3
Did I attack at an inopportune time?
KARO
I don’t think you had much choice.
HODAG
(to Milamo)
What is it?
MILAMO
You. What do you think you’re doing?
HODAG
Trying to find out –
MILAMO
That’s the enemy and you’re laying out the red carpet!
HODAG
I’m trying to find out what’s going on! It doesn’t sound like it’s in charge of … whatever.
SOUND: The robot moves closer to them
NM3
Unfortunately, I am not.
MILAMO
You! Get back, before I …
HODAG
Milamo! How else will we know what’s going on?
MILAMO
Right.
(she shoulders her weapon again)
Start talking! What are you doing out here? Where are all the monsters who’ve disappeared? Why do you still … exist?
NM3
I am sorry. Shall I answer in that order?
MILAMO
Don’t give me that C-3PO bullshit.
HODAG
It’s trying!
KARO
Is “it” the right pronoun? We never asked.
NM3
“It” seems appropriate when referring to a machine of limited consciousness. As to your questions … I was sent as a scout, perhaps even a spy, watching our path for any unexpected pursuit. But I was only intended to observe. The Colonel does not trust me to take action independently.
MILAMO
Like shooting at us?
NM3
You did attack first.
HODAG
See?
KARO
Are you allowed to be talking to us?
NM3
He would not approve. But I have qualms regarding our current course of action.
HODAG
Which is?
MILAMO
Answer him! I’ll know if you’re lying.
NM3
I will not deceive you. Your … fellow sentient non-humans have not been harmed, though the Colonel has not told me his full plans. For the time being, according to the Protocols, we have only abducted and interrogated the enemy combatants.
HODAG
What protocols? Why would you do that?
MILAMO
Where are they? Where’s Unk Tripodero? Mx. Hullabaloo? Take us to them now!
KARO
(aside to Hodag)
Mx. Hullabaloo?
HODAG
That’s our neighbour. The name is actually –
NM3
I can take you there. And perhaps I should. But before that, a response to the last of your previous questions?
SOUND: A bit of fidgety robot noise
NM3
You asked why we still exist. Extrapolating that you are asking why we are still here.
(brief pause, more human again)
Colonel Nielsen would say that we continue surveillance on the monsters who remain. When the stories changed, there were opportunities to move into Singularity, a … number of opportunities. At first, I think he considered it. He discussed it several times.
HODAG
But you didn’t want to go?
NM3
Oh. He ‘discussed’ it, speaking out loud to himself. Not requesting my opinion. And as we waited, there were … reports back from those who had moved on. The new world required immediate adaptation. The stories for which we were the archetype had become … obsolete.
(brief pause)
I was certainly concerned. My programming was already out of date by that time, and my lack of self-sufficiency … it was not my decision, but when the Colonel refused those opportunities, I remained to keep him company. And so he had someone to ‘discuss’ things with. If I had not done so, this would have been an issue long ago.
HODAG
You’re only here because of this Neilsen … and you’ve been holding him back all this time.
NM3
Not successfully as of late.
KARO
Why are you telling us all of this?
NM3
(after a moment)
No one else has … ever asked.
MILAMO
Why are we listening to this bullshit! Let’s get going!
KARO
Now?
HODAG
Hold on –
MILAMO
What’s there to wait for?
NM3
He is fully-armed, I should warn you. And well-trained. Our location has been secured and protected against intruders.
HODAG
I think we should bring it back to Per to decide.
MILAMO
Well … I do have backup weapons at home, too.
HODAG
That’s decided, then.
SOUND: They start moving around, gathering up to get ready to go; NM3 moves too
NM3
I am to remain with you?
MILAMO
If you know what’s good for you, trash can.
HODAG
You could ease up on the insults.
MILAMO
I’m not afraid of any robot. Or their human ‘Colonel’. Let’s head out.
SOUND: She starts to walk away fast
KARO
Wait. Human?
SOUND: They all hurry to keep up with Milamo
KARO
There’s a human up here?
HODAG
Not … exactly. I’ll explain on the way. We better keep up.
SOUND: Hurried footsteps, robot treads fading as the scene ends
SOUND: The background ends with the rest of the scene
SCENE THREE
SOUND: Pretty much the same background we’ve been using
SOUND: Footsteps / robot treads fading in
KARO
I’m still not sure I get how that can happen.
HODAG
Well … you said you met Alan-a-Dale, right? He’s human.
KARO
He’s a singing skeleton!
HODAG
He is now.
(he sighs)
Maybe it’ll make more sense if Per explains it. We’re almost home.
MILAMO
Bold of you to still call it home.
HODAG
Would you just shut up?
MILAMO
Whatever.
SOUND: Footsteps continue; we hear the same gate opening and closing again (E1Sc3)
NM3
(a bit anxious)
This is your homestead?
HODAG
Right.
NM3
Oh.
MILAMO
I’m gonna go dig up my backups. Go find Per and fill them in.
KARO
Do you need help?
MILAMO
(already distant)
I’ve got it.
HODAG
She’s always been an asshole.
SOUND: Faintly, the screen door banging back and forth, open
KARO
Now that we know where we’re headed, maybe – is that the door open?
HODAG
It is …
KARO
Is that normal?
HODAG
Are you kidding? “Hodag, shut the door, you’re letting moondust in.” Every time.
SOUND: Their footsteps quicken
NM3
What is happening?
SOUND: Footsteps on the porch and then through the door
SOUND: Background crosses to inside room tone
HODAG
(calling out)
Per? Per, you left the door open. Per?
KARO
(getting worried)
Yvonne? Vonnie?
HODAG
Per?
SOUND: Karo rushing to the back of the house
NM3
(after a moment)
Oh, no.
KARO
(distant)
Vonnie?
SOUND: Robot noises, Hodag’s footsteps, fading with the background as the scene ends
(The episode ends.)
